Foundations of MATHEMATICS
Maria Flavia Mammana's research activities mainly concern:
- Euclidean Geometry from the point of view of geometric transformations;
- issues relating to teaching/learning geometry with technology;
- the introduction of Serious Games in the teaching/learning of mathematics;
- the role of the body and movement in the teaching/learning of mathematics.
Research activities are conducted within the Teaching Research and Experimentation Core of the Department of Mathematics and Informatics. The research carried out within the Core is developed
following a methodological path marked out in various stages. The path begins, for example, with research into new properties of elementary geometry; these properties are then used to design innovative teaching proposals for upper secondary schools; finally, classroom experiments are developed and the results are examined.
Together with computer science colleagues from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at UniCT, studies were launched within the SGM (Serious Games for Math) project on the creation and experimentation of 'serious games' for learning basic mathematical concepts, and within the TEMA project on the learning of Maya mathematics as early as kindergarten.
In 2016, research was launched with Francesca Ferrara (University of Turin), Elizabeth de Freitas (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Michela Mschietto (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia). The subject of the study is the peculiar role of body and movement in mathematical activity, particularly within the learning and teaching processes of the discipline in the classroom context.
He is the scientific responsible for Italy of the MaSCE3 and ASYMPTOTE projects, of which UniCT is one of the partners.
