Filippo STANCO

Full Professor of Informatics [INFO-01/A]

Filippo Stanco was born in Nicosia (EN) il 12/12/1975. He is President of the Bachelor Degree program at University of Catania. He received the degree in Computer Science (summa cum laude) from the University of Catania in 1999 with a thesis titled “Automatic Learning of Graphic Pattern” and he received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Catania in 2003 with a thesis titled "Image Enhancement Techniques: Zooming and Super Resolution". From 2003 to 2005 he was research assistant at the University of Trieste on the project “Develop of an automatic system to restore antique photographic prints (SIRAD)” and from 2005 to 2006 he was Research Assistant at the University of Catania on “Image processing and computer graphics”. From 2006 to 2014 he is Assistant Professor (INF/01) with University of Catania. Form 2014 to 2023 he is Associate Professor (INF/01) at University of Catania. Since 2023 he is Full Professor with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Catania. He is the coordinator of the “Archeomatica project” (www.archeomatica.unict.it) to develop new digital tools for the archaeological research and the preservation of Cultural Heritage. His research interests include digital restoration, zooming, super-resolution, artifacts removal, interpolation, texture and GIS. He is also Deputy Rector for Technological Innovation on Information and Communication.
Filippo Stanco is teacher of “Interazione e Multimedia” and “Multimedia” at University of Catania, and ha has been teacher of “Video and photo Editing” at the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania.
He is the author of the book “Fondamenti di image processing” and he has prepared the Italian version of the book “Digital Image Processing”. He is editor of the book “Digital Imaging for Cultural Heritage Preservation. Analysis, Restoration and Reconstruction of Ancient Artworks”, CRC Press. He is member of technical committee of the joint-lab between the STMicroelectronics and the University of Catania to research on “Image processing on Digital Devices”. He is member of the center of territorial Governance of the University of Catania and of the “Centro di Archeologia Cretese” (Cretan archaeological center).
He has published about 150 papers in International journals and conferences. He is reviewer for several international journals, and he is a senior member of IEEE.

His research interests lie in the fields of Image Processing, Machine Learning and Computer vision and mainly focus on food images understanding and cultural heritage preservation and valorization. His research paper address challenging problem in several fields, which requires the use of imaging algorithms to be properly solved. Among them: image compression using re-indexing and color optimization, visual document fingerprint extraction and recognition, food recognition and classification, nutrients estimation from visual media, video artifacts detection and correction and so on.
