A NEMATIC THEORY FOR NON SPHERICAL RAREFIED GAS

Abstract: The rod-like molecules in polyatomic gasses give rise to anisotropic effects. We propose a nematic model for such gasses to study these phenomena.We adopt as a primer the Curtiss-Boltzmann equation. Usually obtained from a mechanical perspective, we recast the balance laws obtained from the usual four collision invariants in the form of the Ericksen–Leslie equations. This framework predicts many anisotropic phenomena, including anisotropic wave propagation and Freedericksz transitions.
