Giovanni STAGLIANO'

Associate Professor of Geometry [MATH-02/B]

Giovanni Staglianò is Associate Professor of Geometry at the University of Catania.

His research focuses on algebraic geometry and its computational aspects.

He is the national principal investigator (PI) of the PRIN 2022 project "Unirationality, Hilbert schemes, and singularities", funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research with a grant of approximately 165 thousand euros. The project involves research units from the Universities of Catania, Milan (unit leader: A. Sammartano), and Genoa (unit leader: A. De Stefani).

He teaches in the Master's Degree Program in Mathematics and in the Bachelor's Degree Program in Computer Engineering. He is also a member of the PhD Program in Mathematics (CT-ME-PA consortium).

Main research areas.
Complex algebraic geometry with emphasis on classification problems related to Cremona transformations and  rationality questions about smooth projective varieties (principally, cubic fourfolds, Gushel-Mukai fourfolds, and complete intersections of three quadrics in P^7). Real algebraic geometry focusing on tensor rank. Computational algebra: research and implementation of algorithms such as for multivariate resultants, discriminants, and hyperdeterminants.
