Detailed Course Content

The objective of this lessons is to give a comprehensive account of the use of Hamilton’s principle to derive the equations that govern the mechanical behavior of continuous media. The classical theories of fluid and solid mechanics are discussed as well as two generalizations of those theories for which Hamilton’s principle is particularly suited: materials with microstructure and mixtures.

Contents: analytical mechanics (Hamilton's principle, conservative and non-conservative forces, constrained systems); linear algebra (vector spaces, linear transformations, tensors); continuous and differentiable functions; fields, gradient, curl, divergence; classical theory of mechanics of continuous media (ideal fluids, elastic solids, inelastic materials); mechanics of granular materials and elastic materials with microstructure; mechanics of mixtures.
