Maria Serafina MADONIA

Associate Professor of Informatics [INFO-01/A]

Maria Serafina Madonia, born in Palermo on 31 December 1962, has been an associate professor (S.S.D. INF/01) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI) of the University of Catania since 1 January 2022. From May 1996 to December 2021 she is was confirmed researcher (S.S.D. INF/01) at the same department. In 1985, she graduated in Mathematics (Applicative address) at the University of Palermo and, in 1991, she obtained the title of PhD in Mathematics (III cycle - Consortium Universities of Palermo, Catania and Messina). He teaches in Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in Computer Science and carries out research activities in the field of theoretical computer science.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

 

She carries out research in the field of formal language theory and, more exactly, she is interested in algebraic and combinatorial problems of the theories of automata, two-dimensional languages ​​and codes. In particular, she addressed the following topics:

 

- Recognizable two-dimensional languages

- Picture codes

- Automata on unary alphabets

- “Covering” of words

- Z-monoids and z-codes

- Rational relationships

- Reducibility of binary trees

She has worked, and still does, as scientific reviewer for numerous international journals and for numerous national and international conferences.

 

From 1998 to today she has participated in various research projects funded by MIUR, INDAM and the University of Catania.
