TEACHING ACTIVITY
Current teaching load: three courses of 6 CFU (48 hours each): Computational Fluid Dynamics (second year master, first semester), basic numerical methods (second year bachelor, second semester), and numerical methods for partial differential equations (first year master, second semester).
Prof. Russo has taught several other courses at undergraduate level (numerical methods for odes, approximation methods, introduction to computer programming, numerical analysis) and at graduate level (shock capturing schemes for conservation laws, series of lectures on various topics and numerical methods for PDEs, summer schools on numerical methods for kinetic equations and balance laws).
PHD RESPONSIBILITY
Coordinator of PhD programs for more than 16 years, (PhD program in Mathematics for Technology, Applied Mathematics, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science).
He has been advisor of nine PhD students.
SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEES
Prof. Russo has served as member of the Council of the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) for eight years (2012-2019).
He has been a member of the board of SIMAI, the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics (2013-2020).
Member of EMS, group of Applied Mathematics, from 2014 to 2021
He has been in the scientific committee of several conferences (including the biannual Italian conference on hyperbolic problems several times).
Prof. Russo has been member of several committee for university positions and PhD defense committee, both in Italy and abroad.
CONFERENCE ORGANIZATION
G.Russo organized several conferences, workshops, and summer schools.
He has been Chair of The 18th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, Taormina, June 9-13, 2014, with about 370 participants (http:/www.taosciences.it/ecmi2014/ ), Chair of SIMAI 2014, Taormina, July 7-10, 2014 (http:/www.taosciences.it/simai-2014/ ), with about 150 participants.
More recently, he co-organized, together with L.Pareschi, he has been co-organizer of the GSSI school on Uncertainty Quantification for Hyperbolic Equations and Related Topics, GSSI, L’Aquila, April 24-28, 2017 (http:/www.gssi.infn.it/seminars/seminars-and-events-2017/item/1733-school-on-uncertainty- quantification-for-hyperbolic-equations-and-related-topics), and together with Prof. Selim Esedoglu, the international conference in memory of Prof. Peter Smereka, at the University of Michigam, July 2018. He co-organized other workshops and minisymposia (“Efficient high order time discretization methods for PDE’s”, first edition May 2019, second edition May 2022, Kinetic Traffic Models and Numerical Methods, Rome, February 2020,
minisymposium at SIMAI 2021 in Parma).
In 2018 the INdAM Day Recent Advances in Multiscale Modeling and Numerics for Hyperbolic and Kinetic equations celebrated the 60th birthday of prof. Russo.

RESEARCH PROJECTS
He has been PI in several research projects, both national and international.
The current projects are:
- Interdipartmental project MOSCOVID - MOdeling and Simulation for COVID 2019. Role: PI Duration two years.
- PRIN 2017 Innovative numerical methods for evolutionary partial differential equations and applications. Role: National PI. National project involving six universities. Duration: three years. Total budget 438000 Euro. Termination: January 2023.
Some previous projects in the last decade were:
- 2016-2019. ITN-ETN Horizon 2020 Marie Curie project ModCompShock, Modeling and Computation of Shocks and Interfaces, involving eight European nodes, whose main aim is the formation and education. Role: PI of the Catania Unit. Duration: four years. Total budget: 3918484.14 Euro.
- 2015-2016. MODCLIM, MODeling CLinic in Industrial Mathematics, is a European consortium of nine university devoted to formation and education of (master and PhD) students on several topics of Industrial Mathematics. The project organizes events of the two years 2015-2016. University of Catania is one of the nine partners, and Prof. Russo is the scientific responsible for the Catania node. - PRIN 2009 In July 2011 the National Project “Innovative Numerical Methods for Hyperbolic Problems with Applications to Fluid dynamics, Kinetic Theory and Computational Biology” was accepted and funded by Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). The project, coordinated by Giovanni Russo, was composed by three research units, located respectively in Catania, Milano, and Ferrara. It lasts two years, with a total budget of 165,391 Euros, of which 115,774 coming from MIUR.
- 2008-2010. Lava project LAVA is a project that the Civil Protection commissioned to the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Prof. Russo is responsible of Research Unit n.8, in charge of “Simulation of lava flows”. Budget of the unit: 48,000 Euros.
