STUDIES AND EDUCATION

Main steps:

-  1991: degree in Mathematics; mark: 110/110 with honours at Università “La Sapienza” of Rome;

 - a.a. 1991-92: education grant for graduates provided by INdAM;

- a.a. 1992-93 - 1995-96: PhD at "La Sapienza", Rome, positively accomplished with a thesis entitled: "Modulo canonico di anelli ridotti di dimensione uno e semigruppi loro associati ";

- Gennaio-Luglio 1994 e Agosto-Dicembre 1995: visiting scholar at Purdue University (Indiana, USA) with research activities under the direction of Professor William J. Heinzer;

- Gennaio-Luglio 1997: CNR grant for graduates at Università di Roma III, with research activities under the direction of prof. M. Fontana;

Winner of a competition for a position as researcher in Algebra at the University of Catania in1997, he is associated professor at the same University since November 2001.

 

INSTITUTIONAL ACTIVITIES AT CATANIA UNIVERSITY

Marco D'Anna since 2003 was member of the Committees of Professors for the PhD programs in Mathematics of Catania University; member of the Council of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (2005-2011); member of the Scientific University Committee (Area 01- Mathematics and Computer Science; 2008-2012); head of the Master Degree Course in Mathematics (2012-2015), vice-director of the Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica (2015-16); head of the Master Degree Course in Mathematics (2018-2020).

At the moment is of the Committees of Professors for the PhD program in Mathematics and Computational Sciences (joint PhD program of the universities of Catania, Messina and Palermo).

Since 2002 he act as referee for many international scientific journals and was members of some committees for final discussions of PhD theses and for competitions for researcher position.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Marco D’Anna taught for the various degree courses in Mathematicshe following subjects: Advanced geometry, Linear algebra, Algebra, Complements of Algebra, Coding theory and criptography, Commutative Algebra, Algebraic methods for coding theory and criptography. He also taught Elements of Mathematics (for the degree couse in Life Sciences di Laurea), Commutative algebra, Elements of algebra for differeintial geometry, Completions and power series, Numerical semigroups and applications (for the PhD program) and Complements of Commutative Algebra, Polynomials and power series, Plane algebraic curves, Numerical semigroups and applications, Introductory algebraic number theory (for the "Scuola Superiore dell’Università di Catania").

At the moment he teaches Algebra and Commutative Algebra.

He has been supervisor for many final theses of first and master level; among the master theses, four of them were winner of the Anile Prize (2009, 2012, 2016 and 2022). He has been advisor for six PhD students that defended succesfully thei thesis and he is now advisor of three PhD students. Moreover he has been or is tutor of some students of the Scuola Superiore dell’Università Catania.

He is also Coordinator of the Laboratory in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry (activity for master students).

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The main research areas of Marco D'Anna are numerical semigroups, good semigroups (a class of subsemigroups of N^h including value semigroups of curve singularities with h branches) and their applications in commutative algebra and curve singularities; one-dimensional rings; ideal theory for the above-mentioned semigroups and rings. He published 39 scientific papers on international mathematical journals or internationl conference proceedings and a monography on numerical semigroups. Since 2022 he is "Socio corrispondente residente" of "Acccademia Gioenia di Catania".

He is often speaker in international meetings and he has been scientific responsible for two INdAM meetings in Cortona, of a CIRM meeting in Levico Terme and of an INdAM workshop in Roma (IMNS 2014, 2016, 2018 e 2022). 

He participated in many national (PRIN) and local research projects. At the moment he is P.I. of the local project “Proprietà locali e globali di anelli e varietà algebriche” - PIACERI 2020-22 and he is a member of the national project PRIN 2020: “Squarefree Gröbner degenerations, special varieties and related topics”.

VIEW THE PUBLICATIONS

Main research areas: Numerical semigroups, good semigroups (a class of subsemigroups of N^h including value semigroups of curve singularities with h branches) and their applications in commutative algebra and curve singularities; one-dimensional rings; ideal theory for the above-mentioned semigroups and rings. Ring extensions satisfying prescribed properties: amalgamation algebras and quotients of the Rees algebra.

He has been scientific responsible for two INdAM meetings in Cortona, of a CIRM meeting in Levico Terme and of an INdAM workshop in Roma (IMNS 2014, 2016, 2018 e 2022).
