Fundamentals of Modern Physics

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: Giuseppe FALCI

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course introduces the main ideas of modern physics developed in the XX century, namely relativity, statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. When possible we use the language of classical and quantum information  elaborated in the last 30 years, introducing topics of actual interest related to quantum technologies.

  • Knowledge and understanding – Knowledge of the main ideas and theoretical techniques in modern physics and quantum technologies. Knowledge of some basic numerical techniques with the software Wolfram-Mathematica.
  • Applying knowledge and understanding – Ability in applying fundamental theoretical techniques and approximate schemes for the analysis and simulation of systems of interest in physics.
  • Communication skills – Ability in communicating modern Physics and quantum technologies.
  • Learning skills – Acquiring skills allowing the continuous upgrade of the knowledge in the field, by accessing a research environment and specialized literature.

Course Structure

  • Standard lectures, exercises and demonstrations with dedicated software (Mathematica). Seminars by experts will be organized.
  • Should the circumstances require online or blended teaching, appropriate modifications to what is hereby stated may be introduced, in order to achieve the main objectives of the course.

Required Prerequisites

Classical mechanics, thermodynamics and  electromagnetism (Fisica generale 1 e 2); basic mathematics (Analisi matematica 1 e 2, Algebra lineare); elements of functional analysis.

Attendance of Lessons

Attending the lectures is warmly suggested
